Rome
Rome is the capital of Italy and one of the most historically significant cities in the world. Ancient Roman landmarks, Renaissance art, and baroque architecture all exist side by side throughout the city. It’s a big, busy place, but wandering through its streets means constantly running into famous monuments, fountains, and churches.
Getting to Rome
By Plane:
Most international flights arrive at Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO). From the airport, you can take the Leonardo Express train directly to Roma Termini railway station in about 30 minutes.
By Train:
Rome’s main rail hub is Roma Termini railway station. High-speed trains connect Rome to Florence in about 1.5 hours and to Pisa in roughly 3 hours.
By Car:
Not recommended. Driving in Rome can be hectic and the historic center has restricted traffic zones. Most visitors avoid driving and rely on trains or taxis instead.
Getting Around Rome
Walking is the best way to see the historic center since many major sights are close together. For longer distances, Rome has a metro system, buses, taxis, and rideshare options.

Centro Storico:
This historic district puts you close to major landmarks, restaurants, and piazzas.
Trastevere:
This is where we stayed on our previous visit. This is the neighborhood across the river, which is known for being a bit more lively and having a more active nightlife. We really enjoyed this area!
Fun fact: Trastevere means "across the Tiber", which is the river running through Rome
