Pisa
Pisa is a historic Tuscan city along the Arno River best known for the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. The tower is part of the larger Piazza dei Miracoli complex, which includes a cathedral, baptistery, and cemetery. Beyond the tourist area, Pisa is also a lively university city with plenty of cafés, river walks, and local restaurants.
Getting to Pisa
By Plane:
The closest airport is Pisa International Airport (PSA). From the airport, you can take the 5 minute journey on the PisaMover train directly to Pisa Centrale railway station.
By Train:
Pisa has two train stations: Pisa Centrale, and Pisa S. Rossore.
Pisa S. Rossore is much closer to the monuments (about a 0.75 mile walk), so you'll likely want to go there if you're doing a day trip.
Pisa Centrale is across the river and about 2 miles from the monuments. The Pisamover train from the airport only goes to this station, but it would be simple to take the short train ride to the other Pisa S. Rossore.
By Car:
Not recommended. You can easily drive to Pisa, but know that the city center is mostly ZTL, a restricted area for residents only. If you cross into the ZTL, you will receive a fine by mail about 3-36 months after the fact, so plan accordingly if you come by car.
Getting Around Pisa
Pisa is fairly compact and easy to explore on foot. The main sights are all within walking distance, including the route from the train station to the tower area. Taxis and buses are available, but it's usually easiest just to walk.
Where to Stay in Pisa
If your goal is to add a bit onto your trip and experience a Tuscan city, we actually recommend staying in Lucca instead, as it would be more likely to provide you the experience you're after.

If, however, you'd just like to have the most convenient place possible to get to and from the villa, then Pisa is a great choice. The city still has plenty to offer and explore, the energy is just a bit different than most Tuscan cities due to it having such a large university.
